Obama Ending ‘Wet Foot, Dry Foot’ Policy for Cuban Migrants

obama-putin-repubeditedRoughly a week before he leaves office, President Barack Obama has has made the decision to scrap the “wet foot, dry foot” policy that allows the majority of Cuban migrants who come to the United States to become permanent resident within a year.

USA Today reported that this was confirmed by a congressional staffer who had been briefed ahead of an official announcement. They policy is expected to take effect immediately.

It is reported that Cuba has agreed with the US to begin taking Cubans back who were ordered deported from America. This was something they refused to do in the past.

The policy was put in place by President Bill Clinton in 1995. It was a more conservative approach to the previous policy that allowed Cuban refugees caught at see to become permanent residents within a year. The revision stated that they needed to make it to land first.

President-elect Donald Trump has already promised to make sweeping changes to the Obama’s policies regarding Cuba. Starting in late 2014, POTUS began a normalization of the relationship between the two countries, with the opening of embassies and establishing diplomatic ties.
