Obama: ‘You Get the Politicians You Deserve’ If You Don’t Vote, Get Involved
Former President Barack Obama has been making a number of public appearances recently, and today he talked about people getting “the politicians [they] deserve” when they’re not more politically active.
Obama spoke at the Seeds&Chips Global Food Innovation Summit earlier today and at one point touched on how “the mark of a good leader is somebody who is able to empower other people” to speak up.
And then he made this observation:
People have a tendency to blame politicians when things don’t work, but as I always tell people, you get the politicians you deserve, and if you don’t vote and you don’t participate and you don’t pay attention, then you’ll get policies that don’t reflect your interests.
Back in December, as he was reflecting on Donald Trump‘s victory, he talked about the importance of Democrats needing to “show up” and not just “during election time.”
The former president also did some reflecting today on his time in office, and when asked what he doesn’t miss, Obama joked about the “very nice prison” he was in because of all the security.
