Have you heard about this crazy story where a little kid got into a gorilla pen at the Cincinnati Zoo? Yeah, it is a small story; no one is really talking about it or anything. Anyway, the gorilla was shot and then the story went away.
Just kidding! This is all anyone is talking about.
Yesterday, after the news of the shooting at UCLA broke, once it was determined that no one else was going to die, CNN went back to their coverage of this gorilla story. Somehow, it’s been dominating the news for five days.
CNN isn’t alone in its determination to bring every angle of this seemingly straightforward story straight to viewers. Chicago’s WGN made quick work of looking through their archives to find another story that is weirdly similar.
Here is raw footage of what happened after a three-year-old boy fell into the gorilla enclosure at Brookfield Zoo:
An eight-year-old female gorilla named Binta Jua, who had her baby with her the whole time, picked up the limp child and carried him to safety. This is how WGN reported on it when it happened in 1996:
Of course, the big difference here is that in this latest case, the child was grabbed aggressively by a male ape and in 1996, the child was grabbed by a female ape who was caring for a baby herself and had her maternal instincts on display.
