The San Francisco Gate reports that Kyle Ludowitz was attacked by what he described as “anarchists wearing masks.”

“I was mostly being punched in the face until I fell to the ground. I tried to protect my gear and they started kicking,” Ludowitz told the Daily Mail.

Ludowitz told the Daily Mail that the assault happened after he was spotted taking pictures of the attackers throwing rocks at storefront windows and looting.

“I was expecting more violence from the police, so this caught me off guard,” Ludowitz said.

Similar protests have broken out in many major cities across the country, including; New York, Baltimore, and Los Angeles.

In addition to the injuries he suffered, Ludowitz’s two cameras, valued at $5,000, were destroyed in the attack. The photojournalist, who spent five years covering combat zones in the Middle East, told the Gate that he’d never experienced anything like Wednesday’s protest.
