Politico Columnist: Rick Perry Sending Troops to Border to ‘Shoot Small Children’
There’s your version of hyperbole. And then there’s Roger Simon‘s version of hyperbole.
Simon, a center-left columnist for Politico, tweeted Tuesday night that Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is “sending 1,000 National Guard troops to [U.S.-Mexico] border to shoot small children.”
“Could make good headlines,” the tweet said, “in Russia.”
Response to the comment, which received 110 retweets and 30 “favorites,” was fierce.
“Go fuck yourself,” one person replied to Simon. “Are you fucking retarded?” said another.
Perry announced during a press conference this week that he is indeed sending 1,000 U.S National Guard troops to the border to prevent undocumented immigrants from making their way onto American soil. Texas Adjutant General John Nichols said at the time that the troops will serve a “referring and deterring” role at the border, discouraging immigrants from crossing the border by simply being present. Otherwise, they will refer any unauthorized border-crossers to the Department of Public Safety.
A Politico spokesperson did not return request for comment.
