Prisoner in Police Van: Freddie Gray Tried to Injure Himself
A document written by a Baltimore police investigator and uncovered by The Washington Post cites a prisoner sharing a van with Freddie Gray claiming that Gray was “banging against the walls” of the police vehicle.
This unidentified prisoner is quoted as saying Gray was “intentionally trying to injure himself.” But as WaPo notes, “The prisoner, who is currently in jail, was separated from Gray by a metal partition and could not see him.”
The police have not yet stated exactly what happened to Gray, and they indicated earlier the findings of their investigation into the matter would not be made public.
This is how one of the Gray family attorneys responded:
“We disagree with any implication that Freddie Gray severed his own spinal cord. We question the accuracy of the police reports we’ve seen thus far, including the police report that says Mr. Gray was arrested without force or incident.”
Gray died of a spinal injury while in police custody, and much speculation ensued about what happened inside the police vehicle, including the suggestion that he was deliberately not buckled in so he could get a “rough ride.” Gray’s death triggered the wave of protests in Baltimore that’s spread to other cities tonight.
