Rachel Maddow Reports That Secret Service Is Banning Mobile Devices From West Wing

This evening, MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow provided a scoop to her viewers regarding a new policy the Secret Service will implement in the West Wing effective this month.

Beginning her segment by highlighting a Politico report about the White House discovering Chief of Staff John Kelly’s personal cell phone had been compromised, Maddow noted that in a worst-case scenario Kelly’s phone could have been used by an adversary as a spying device.

“This news does sort of send a chill down my spine in terms of American national security,” she added.

Maddow went on to say that she had received a memo that had been sent to Secret Service personnel about new guidelines, explaining that neither the White House or Secret Service would confirm the details in the memo. According to the new guidance, personal mobile devices will be prohibited from the West Wing. These include tablets, cell phones, and smart watches.

Per the memo, those devices will be placed in a lockbox and turned off completely before the person enters the area. West Wing tours will be impacted by this new policy on Friday.
