Rahm Emanuel Warns Democrats From Running on Trump Impeachment: Not a ‘Political Issue’
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said during an Axios talk on Monday that Democrats should tamp down talk about impeaching President Donald Trump.
“Is impeachment a good issue for Democrats?” Axios’ Mike Allen asked the mayor and former White House chief of staff for Obama.
“I lived through the Clinton White House,” Emanuel explained. “This is a serious legal and constitutional, not political, issue.”
“And my view is, there’s nothing there to date that we know,” Emanuel said, noting “I couldn’t be angrier at Donald Trump.”
“That said, you don’t just flippantly say we’re for or against [impeachment],” he added. “When we get to it, we collectively as a country will know it, as we did with Richard Nixon.”
“For your Democratic candidates, you don’t recommend them pushing it now?” Allen pressed.
“I know you want to drive to politics,” Emanuel replied. “This is a case where the best politics is good policy.”
