Rep. Cummings on Comey Firing: ‘If This Were Hillary’ GOP Would Call for Impeachment
We’ve seen a number of strong takes from Democrats regarding President Donald Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer suggested that the termination was part of a coverup in the Trump/Russia investigations. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) invoked treason while Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) stated that Comey was fired because of the Russians.
Now we can add Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) to the list of prominent Dems who have expressed harsh criticism of the president’s actions.
During an MSNBC appearance last night, Cummings wanted Republicans to place the shoe on the other foot and ask themselves how they’d react if the president were a Democrat. And a specific Democrat at that.
“President Trump — there is absolutely no accountability with regard to this president,” he told host Rachel Maddow. “He basically seems to be able to do whatever he wants. And the Republicans — our Republican friends are aiding and abetting that situation.”
After issuing a laundry list of complaints about the White House’s actions and the lack of transparency from the administration, Cummings then invoked the most recent Democratic presidential nominee.
“If this were Hillary Clinton, the Republicans would be trying to impeach her right now,” the Democratic lawmaker exclaimed.
He also took a few shots at his House Oversight Committee colleague, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), pointing out that the committee chairman held numerous emergency hearings a few months ago to get more info on Clinton surrounding committee investigations into her.
