Report: Gingrich Camp Responds To Rumors Of Rick Perry As VP Choice

Fox News scored an exclusive last night, saying that sources in the Newt Gingrich campaign are seriously considering the possibility of making Texas governor Rick Perry their vice presidential choice ahead of the RNC convention in Tampa. Carl Cameron reported that the campaign thinks a Gingrich-Perry ticket can help coalesce the Evangelical and tea party wings of the GOP.

The Gingrich campaign, however, is flatly denying such conversations are taking place “at any level.” Spokesman R.C. Hammond explained that the campaign understands such talks would be wildly premature, especially considering where the race is right now.

“While there’s certainly a lot of people who are great admirers of Rick Perry on our campaign. whether or not the campaign has gone as far as to reach out to Governor Perry about a possible VP ticket, any sort of talks along those lines would be premature — it would be something more appropriate for later on in the process.”

A Perry spokesperson said the rumor was “humbling but premature,” while a senior aide to Rick Santorum told Fox that it looks like a “desperate HVail Mary to create buzz” ahead of this week’s Southern primaries.
