Richard Sherman: NFL’s N-Word Ban an ‘Atrocious’ Idea, ‘Almost Racist’
Seattle Seahawks cornerback and center of brief media controversy Richard Sherman told the blog Monday Morning Quarterback that the proposed rule against on-field use of the n-word, punishable by a fifteen-yard-penalty, was absurd.
“It’s an atrocious idea,” Sherman said. “It’s almost racist to me. It’s weird they’re targeting one specific word. Why wouldn’t all curse words be banned then?”
Sherman added that the racial epithet is not always used as a slur in professional football, distinguishing between “nigger” and “nigga.” “It’s in the locker room and on the field at all times,” he said. “I hear it almost every series out there on the field.”
MMQB spoke to two other African American players, one of whom agreed with Sherman, the second of whom worried about the logistics of the ban’s enforcement.
