Sad Trombone Elevator: @GSElevator Never Worked at Goldman Sachs

The dream is over, people. @GSElevator, the anonymous Twitter account that tweets kernels of venal wisdom supposedly overheard in the halls of Goldman Sachs, was revealed Monday evening to have never worked in the building.

The man behind the mask turns out to be John Lefevre, a 34-year-old bond trader who worked at CitiBank for seven years and now lives in Texas; LeFevre was almost hired by Sachs in 2010, but the deal fell through due to a non-compete clause. “Frankly, I’m surprised it has taken this long,” he said, when contacted about his identity. “I knew this day would come.”

@GSElevator has caused an internal investigation in Goldman Sachs, but LeFevre insisted he had never represented himself as an employee of the firm. “This was never about me as a person,” he said. “It wasn’t about a firm. The stories aren’t Goldman Sachs in particular. It was about the culture in general.”

LeFevre recently signed a book deal for @GSElevator, a deal not as of yet jeopardized by the revelation of his identity. (On the bright side, he now no longer has to use the pseudonym “J.T. Stone,” which was also the name of an erotica author.)

A Goldman Sachs spokesperson joked Tuesday that the company had lifted its ban on talking in the elevators.
