Scarborough: Low Skilled Immigration ‘Does Drive Down Wages for Working Class Americans’
Occasionally Joe Scarborough reminds people that he used to be a Republican. Though the big story in his show was a brutal panel discussion dissecting CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s tough White House exchange with Stephen Miller, it wasn’t the only story.
Early in hour one, the show took an immigration position quite deferential to Miller. This resulted in a brief exchange between chart wizard Steve Rattner and Scarborough which culminated in the latter declaring bluntly that low skilled immigration “does drive down wages for working class Americans.”
Things got going when Rattner accurately noted how the goal posts of the immigration debate have shifted from between liberal thought leaders and the activist base.
“If you go back to 2006, you’ll find Paul Krugman writing that immigration of low skilled workers threatens white working class Americans. If you go back to 2015, you’ll find Bernie Sanders essentially saying the same thing for which he was shouted down,” said Rattner “Now the Democratic party is firmly, unilaterally, unquestionably on the side of bring us your huddled tired masses, we want more immigrants, we’re in favor of all immigrants and that’s what cost them the white working class voters.”
Stay woke Steve!
Scarborough closed it out, speaking slowly and with deliberation clearly intended for the liberal wing of the Morning Joe audience .
“Just as a matter of course, it also does drive down wages for working class Americans.”
