Several Ferguson Schools Cancel After-School Activities

After it was confirmed today that the Ferguson grand jury has reached a decision on whether to indict Officer Darren Wilson for fatally shooting Michael Brown, some schools in the area announced they would be shutting down after-school activities for the rest of the day.

Just days ago, some schools had announced plans to close today and Tuesday in anticipation of a decision. And now others have decided to call off all after-school activities.

Confluence Charter Schools posted this announcement on their website today:

PARENTS AND STUDENTS – ALL AFTER-SCHOOL AND EVENING ACTIVITIES ARE CANCELED TODAY, NOVEMBER 24, AT CONFLUENCE CHARTER SCHOOLS – OLD NORTH, SOUTH CITY, WALNUT PARK, CONFLUENCE PREPARATORY ACADEMY & GRAND CENTER ARTS ACADEMY.

DUE TO THE PENDING ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE ST. LOUIS COUNTY PROSECUTING ATTORNEY’S OFFICE, THE DECISION TO CANCEL EVENTS FOR TONIGHT IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF.

AS OF NOW, WE DO PLAN TO HAVE CLASSES TOMORROW, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25. HOWEVER, IF PLANS CHANGE, WE WILL NOTIFY PARENTS IN THE SAME WAY WE ANNOUNCE CLOSINGS FOR BAD WEATHER.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Meanwhile, the Clayton School District put out this announcement amid unconfirmed reports about a decision tonight:

The School District of Clayton is aware of unconfirmed media reports stating that the Ferguson grand jury has reached a decision. As of 2 p.m. today, we have yet to receive any official confirmation that a decision has been made or the timing of an announcement. Please know that we are continuing to monitor the situation and will communicate with parents and staff as soon as we have definitive information.

In light of the uncertainty regarding an announcement, and in order to give parents time to plan, we are canceling all afterschool and evening activities for today, November 24. Canceling after-school and evening activities applies to all District meetings and events, school meetings and events, school clubs, activities, athletic practices and games. KidZone and GCC will remain open until their regular closing times but parents are encouraged to pick their children up early if possible. As of now, we are planning to end school at regular times today.

We will be in contact with you regarding the status of school for tomorrow once we have received official information regarding the timing of an announcement.

The Ferguson-Florissant School District, meanwhile, posted a message late this afternoon on Facebook. Here’s part of what it reads:

Normal dismissal procedures including regular dismissal times and transportation will be followed for all schools today.

However, in light of the uncertainty regarding an announcement, and in order to give parents time to plan, we are canceling all after school and evening activities for today, Monday, November 24. Canceling after-school and evening activities applies to all school clubs, activities, athletic practices and games. All district or school meetings, including the Parents as Teachers meeting scheduled for after 4 p.m. are also canceled…

No decision has been made at this time regarding school on Tuesday, Nov. 25. We will be in contact with parents regarding the status of school for tomorrow once we have received official information regarding the timing of an announcement.

And according to KSDK, high school students in the Kirkwood School District were released at 2:40 pm and they have cancelled both after-school activities and buses.
