Study: Cannabis Is No Worse Than ‘Gambling Or Eating Junk Food’

The results of a six-year study from the UK Drug Policy Commission have been published, recommending the government reclassify possession of a small amount of drugs as a civil offense, likening smoking cannabis to other “risky behaviors” people indulge in like “gambling and eating junk food.”

The commission started research in 2007 to “provide objective analysis” of drug policy” independently of lobbyists and the government. The report recommends changes in how the government deals with drug use and possession.

It said there was an argument for amending the laws relating to growing cannabis for personal use which might “go some way to undermining the commercialisation of production”…

The UKDPC report said there are “some moderately selfish or risky behaviours that free societies accept will occur” and seek to limit but not prevent entirely, such as “gambling or eating junk food”.

The director of a drug policy group in the UK reacted to the report by calling on the government to “heed the findings” of the commission.
