Supreme Court to Rule on Obama’s Immigration Executive Actions

supreme courtThe Supreme Court has announced that later this year, they will rule whether or not President Barack Obama‘s executive actions on illegal immigration are constitutional.

In 2014, the Obama administration proposed a series of unilateral executive actions called Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA), which would have granted a quasi-legalized status to certain illegal immigrants protecting them from deportation. Republicans denounced the actions as an unconstitutional infringement on Congress’ power to create laws, and Texas and 25 other states sued challenging the actions.

In 2015, a series of court decisions blocked DAPA from going into effect until Texas v. United States was settled. The Court’s taking up the case is somewhat unusual because the central question of the case — the constitutionality of the actions — still has not been argued in any lower courts at all.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the issue before summer in a term that is already packed with controversial issues like affirmative action and voting rights.
