Texas GOP Lawmaker at Center of Muslim Controversy Blames ‘Fringe Groups’

Texas state Representative Molly White was vaulted into national prominence last Thursday when she instructed her staff to greet Muslim guests during Texas Muslim Capitol Day with imperatives to renounce terrorism and Sharia law and pledge allegiance to the United States. (She also left an Israeli flag as decoration.) The story was part of an overall negative reaction to the Muslim event held at the Texas capitol for the past eleven years.

White did not say she regretted the Facebook post that caught everybody’s attention, but told told the Texas Tribune she hadn’t expected it to cause the reaction it did.

“Hindsight’s 20-20,” White said. “I never thought it was going to go viral. And I thought it was just to folks that were in my district. I didn’t know that there [were] fringe groups out there watching every word you say and things you do.”

She added that nobody had actually stopped by her office on Thursday, but that she would have enforced her instructions in that event.
