The United States Increasingly Suspects Pakistan Aided Osama Bin Laden
The U.S. and Europe have grown increasingly convinced that Osama bin Laden was aided by Pakistani officials – either retired or still active. Many in the U.S. government have expressed concern and suspicion over how the terrorist was able to essentially “hide in plain site” within a massive compound set smack dab in the middle of Abottabad – a touristy, affluent suburban Pakistani neighborhood, within yards of the Pakistan Military Academy. Following news of his demise, officials immediately began asking whether Pakistanis knew bin Laden was in their midst and, if not, why they didn’t.
“There’s no doubt he was protected by some in the ISI,” said one official.
Currently, the U.S. and Pakistan are feuding over what actually happened to bin Laden’s wife, who was in the compound at the time of the raid and has been in the middle of conflicting reports about her current state. Early rumors held that she had been used by her husband as a human shield and was subsequently shot and killed by U.S. troops. Later, the White House clarified that she had received an injury to her leg, but was alive. Pakistani officials have so far refused to allow U.S. officials to interrogate her.
