‘Three Monumental A**holes!’ John Oliver Defiant After London Terror
While John Oliver spent the majority of his show addressing the importance of the Paris Climate Agreement (suddenly in the news again after the United States announced it would pull out), he opened the show with some thoughts about the most recent terrorist attacks in London.
The late night host took particular exception to the idea that Britain was “under siege” or “reeling” from the attack. Oliver said that narrative, popular in most of the mainstream American media, was grossly inaccurate.
“In no way is Britain under siege,” said Oliver, “Is it upset, yes? Is it pissed off? You fucking bet it’s pissed off. But to say it’s under siege and that its people are reeling is to imply that it’s somehow weak enough to be brought to its knees by three monumental assholes.”
In stark contrast to some Conservative British commentators, Oliver presented an uplifting image of Londoners unbowed by terrorism, doing their thing. He even played a clip of a man who went back to the doomed restaurant to pay his bill.
The weekend terrorist attack on London Bridge, led to at least seven deaths and was the third major terrorist attack in the United Kingdom in recent weeks. Only days ago, a bomb tore through an Arianna Grande concert in Manchester leaving 22 dead. In each case, ISIS has claimed responsibility.
