Trump Reportedly Begged Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones to Have Team Stand for Anthem

The symbolism, evidently, did not escape President Donald Trump. Last Monday, the Dallas Cowboys — America’s team — played on Monday Night Football, still arguably the most high-profile showcase in the NFL. And it, apparently, was important to the President that America’s team stand for the National Anthem.

How important? According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the matter was so vital to Trump that he called Cowboys owner Jerry Jones four times prior to last week’s game and, in Rapoport’s words, “implored” Jones to have the team stand for the Anthem.

The Cowboys — including Jones himself — ended up taking a knee prior to the Anthem, then standing up for the song.

Trump weighed in via his Twitter feed following the Cowboys’ gesture.

The Cowboys, according to The New York Times, stood throughout the Anthem ceremony prior to their game on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.
