Trump Reportedly Ignored National Security Advisers’ Warnings on Putin Call: ‘DO NOT CONGRATULATE’
During his Tuesday phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Donald Trump congratulated his Putin for his recent election victory, something he was proud to tell reporters after the fact. The president has received a fair amount of criticism across the political spectrum over this, largely due to the Russian election being a sham.
The thing is, the president’s national security advisers were hoping to avoid this issue, but the president wouldn’t heed their warning.
According to the Washington Post, those advisers presented him with briefing materials prior to the call that had a section in ALL CAPS that read “DO NOT CONGRATULATE.” But, of course, as we now all know, Trump did not listen.
The Post also reported that the president ignored advice from his aides who told him he needed to condemn the Russian leader for the poisoning of a Russian spy in the United Kingdom. Trump, in the end, didn’t bring up Russia’s use of a nerve agent during the call, something White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed today. The attack has left Sergei Skripal and his daughter in critical condition.
Besides telling reporters that he congratulated Putin on his victory, Trump described the call as “very good” and said that he’ll probably be meeting with the Russian president in the near future.
