During a rally in Iowa tonight, President Donald Trump attacked Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein of California for her role in Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation battle, which caused the crowd to start chanting “lock her up.”
“How about Sen. Feinstein?” Trump said after mentioning a number of Democratic senators who opposed Kavanaugh. “That’s another beaut — that’s a beauty!”
The president proceeded to jokingly ask Feinstein, “Did you leak the documents?”
He then did a nervous, erratic impression of Feinstein denying leaking Christine Blasey Ford’s allegations against Kavanaugh.
That mockery triggered an eruption of “lock her up” chants that the president chuckled at.
“And I think they’re talking about Feinstein,” Trump said about the chants. “Can you believe it?”
Donald Trump’s Iowa crowd chants “lock her up!” at his mention of Senator Dianne Feinstein.
The “lock her up” chant has been a mainstay at Trump’s campaign rallies for years, but they are typically directed at former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Feinstein has denied leaking the Ford allegations to the press, despite constant claims from Republicans that she did.
“Did she leak it? 100 percent,” Trump concluded. “No, I don’t want to get sued. 99 percent, now I can’t get sued.”
Intercept reporter Ryan Grim, who initially published the story about Senate Democrats obtaining allegations against Kavanaugh, has denied these claims.
“Feinstein’s staff did not leak the letter to The Intercept,” Grim tweeted.
