Twitter Goes Off on Trump’s Tweetstorm About Putin Meeting: ‘Akin to Partnering With Assad’
This morning, President Donald Trump started his day off as he has many times before during his time in the White House — with an epic tweetstorm that will certainly set the news conversation for the day.
This time around, the president addressed his recent visit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a meeting that created dueling accounts of what was discussed and agreed upon, especially when it comes to Russian election interference. Per Trump, Putin denied election meddling while the president claimed he has already given his opinion on the subject. He then went on to state that the two countries will work together on cyber security while taking shots at the DNC and tweeting that sanctions weren’t discussed. (This conflicts with what Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had previously said.)
As would be expected, there was an immediate reaction to the president’s tweets. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) delivered his own mini-tweetstorm in response:
We have no quarrel with Russia or the Russian people. Problem is with Putin & his oppression, war crimes & interference in our elections 1/3

Partnering with Putin on a "Cyber Security Unit" is akin to partnering with Assad on a "Chemical Weapons Unit". 2/3
— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) July 9, 2017
While reality & pragmatism requires that we engage Vladimir Putin, he will never be a trusted ally or a reliable constructive partner. 1/3

Journalists also weighed in:
Trump didn't hold a press conference at the G20 summit like Putin & other leaders did. He tweets about it & doesn't have to take q's instead

This solves the two biggest problems w most cyber security:
1. Not officially called "impenetrable."
2. No Russians on the security team. https://t.co/6GAhfOTvTz— Binyamin Appelbaum (@BCAppelbaum) July 9, 2017
To be clear: Trump wants to form a cyber security unit with the leader of the country that interfered in our election with cyber attacks. https://t.co/NZR0KlVLxe

Trump not contradicting Russian claim he accepted Putin's denial of election meddling. Says he already gave his "opinion," time to move on

Democrats were expectedly critical of Trump’s statements:
This seems like a confirmation that the WH is trying to kill new Russia sanctions that passed Senate 97-2 in Junehttps://t.co/Lk7IgSmtAc
