Unvaccinated Person Exposes Thousands of Commuters to Measles

An unvaccinated person with measles, possibly a LinkedIn employee, exposed “tens of thousands” of San Francisco residents to the deadly airborne disease while commuting on the BART train.

Reuters reports that the person, who was not identified, traveled between the Lafayette and Montgomery stations between Wednesday and Friday of last week, as well as dined at the E&O Kitchen on Wednesday night. The person is recovering and not hospitalized, but public health officials warn that the measles virus could remain airborne for up to two hours, and that people traveling the Yellow Line could have been exposed. They emphasize, however, that anyone inoculated (which is most people) should be okay.

“Although the risk of contracting measles by being exposed on BART is low, Bay Area residents should be aware of the situation,” the county public health department told Reuters.

The current measles outbreak began when an infected person from outside the country visited Disneyland, exposing dozens of people to the disease. Currently, there are 110 cases reported in California.
