Vanity Fair Responds to Cheney Theory That Clintons Were Behind Lewinsky Profile

There’s been much speculation over why Monica Lewinsky decided to go public this week and over who pushed her to go public at a time when Hillary Clinton‘s spotlight grows larger. And Vanity Fair has responded to the suggestion that the Clintons had anything to do with getting Lewinsky’s story back out in the mainstream.

The most high-profile person thus far to push this theory is Lynne Cheney, who mused on The O’Reilly Factor Tuesday night that the Clintons pushed the piece to “get it out of the way” before 2016. She asked, “Would Vanity Fair publish anything of Monica Lewinsky that Hillary Clinton wouldn’t want in Vanity Fair?”

The theory was also briefly floated on Fox’s The Five yesterday.

The Washington Post‘s Erik Wemple decided to reach out to Vanity Fair for comment about Cheney’s remark. Here’s what happened:

This highly sane and well-substantiated allegation demanded a response from the highest levels of Vanity Fair. So the Erik Wemple Blog put the question to Beth Kseniak, the magazine’s executive director of public relations. Her response: “Seriously?”

Well, that’s succinct.
