A few weeks back, a Democratic elector in Washington state made some waves when he wavered on voting for Hillary Clinton if she wins the state. Robert Satiacum Jr. was a Bernie Sanders supporter who told KING5 News last month that he won’t “be forced to go in there and pick out your poison.”
He criticized both Clinton and Donald Trump as “detached” people who don’t truly “feel what we’re feeling.”
Satiacum admitted he would have to pray on this, because the “world is on fire,” but now he appears to have reached his decision.
The AP reports tonight that in a phone interview with them, Satiacum said, “She will not get my vote, period.”
And he knows he’ll face consequences, but he feels he’s following his conscience:
Satiacum faces a $1,000 fine in Washington if he doesn’t vote for Clinton, but he said he doesn’t care.
“This is a time we all need to stand up and speak out,” he said.
Satiacum is one of 12 Democratic electors in Washington, which Clinton is expected to win. He said he has gotten a lot of criticism since he told media outlets earlier this month that he might not vote for Clinton. But he said he has also heard from electors in other states who thanked him for speaking out. He said he hopes some of those electors follow his lead.
