WATCH: Experience the Insane Sochi Snowboard Course That Shaun White Refuses to Ride
On Wednesday, U.S. snowboard star Shaun White announced he will not be competing in the Olympic debut of the snowboard slopestyle event. The athlete’s announcement came after his sustained a wrist injury while taking a practice run on the course. Another competitor from Norway suffered a broken collar bone on the same course this week.
“After much deliberation with my team, I have made the decision to focus solely on trying to bring home the third straight gold medal in halfpipe for Team USA,” White told NBC News in a statement. “The difficult decision to forego slopestyle is not one I take lightly as I know how much effort everyone has put into holding the slopestyle event for the first time in Olympic history, a history I had planned on being a part of.”
To show off just how crazy the slopestyle course is, Russian Olympian Alexey Sobolev wore a portable GoPro camera on a recent practice run. So now you can experience what is turning into what is certainly one of the most dangerous Olympic events this year.
