WATCH: In 20/20 Preview, Caitlyn Jenner Attends Backyard BBQ With Bathroom Bill Supporters
Caitlyn Jenner has a 20/20 interview tonight and this preview makes it look like a must-see.
This interview is a follow-up to her groundbreaking 2015 appearance on the ABC News program. Once again, she’s telling her story to Diane Sawyer, but instead of revealing herself to be trans this time, she’ll talk about the issues she’s faced in the two years since their last meeting. The two hugged like old friends in the preview shown on this morning’s Good Morning America.
Jenner is shown expressing happiness and making it clear that she has no regrets after publicly coming out and transitioning. Her sister joins the interview and shares that she hopes the Olympian will find a “companion” soon.
The preview is especially interesting, though, because it features a scene in which Jenner and Sawyer go to a backyard barbecue with parents of trans kids and parents who don’t believe that trans students should be able to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity. Trans rights, especially as they relate to public bathroom use, have been a hot topic over the last year or so. Jenner used her show, I Am Cait, to address the concerns and spoke out when Donald Trump rolled back protections for trans kids that were left over from Barack Obama‘s administration.
In the 20/20 clip, a Mormon woman reveals that her son shared the “bad news” that a fellow student he’d always thought was female had revealed a new gender identity and begun using the boys’ bathroom.
“There are certain things that the religious community holds dear and modesty and privacy — that’s one of those things,” the mother says.
A woman of color countered that in college, her basketball team hadn’t wanted to dress with her in the locker room because of her race. She noted that there is always fear of something new at first, but that doesn’t make it right.
