The 16th hole at the TPC Scottsdale is a hole unlike any other on the PGA Tour. It features, by a healthy margin, the rowdiest crowd in all of golf. More than 15,000 people — many revelers from nearby Arizona State University — gather around the hole each day for a party unlike any other.
Tradition dictates that the crowd go wild if a player hits a shot on the green. That’s not too unusual. But if a player misses the green with his tee shot, the gallery boos the offender. And if the player really misses the green, then they absolutely let him have it.
Mark Wahlberg found that out the hard way. The actor took his swing at the famed hole during Wednesday’s pro-am competition. And it didn’t go well.
Wahlberg totally shanked it. The ball went way left.
Sheepishly, Wahlberg requested permission for a mulligan. He stepped up again, and this time fared a little better. The gallery cheered the result.
But you only get one chance to make a first impression, Marky Mark. And the crowd at the 16th is a pretty unforgiving bunch.
Watch above, via Facebook and the PGA Tour. Fast-forward to approximately the 6:30 mark for Wahlberg’s first shot.
