Watch: Rep. Louis Gohmert Sends Fellow Congressman to Slumberland on C-SPAN
As if shutting the government down wasn’t bad enough, now Republicans in Congress have taken to shutting each other down. On Thursday night, Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-TX) was about 40 minutes into an hour-long speech about the current shutdown and Obamacare when C-SPAN’s camera caught presiding officer Rep. George Holding (R-NC) apparently napping, although sources with knowledge of the incident say the Congressman was just “furloughing his eyelids.”
The clip was flagged by The Hill‘s sharp-eyed Pete Kasperowicz, who notes that Gohmert has a penchant for turning already-dry House sessions into Zzzz-Span:
The strange camera pan happened about 40 minutes into Gohmert’s speech. Gohmert is known for using the end of the day in the House to take the floor and deliver a “special order” speech, sometimes more than once a week.
With 800,000 federal employees sidelined by the government shutdown, it must be heartening for them to see that the guys who shut them down are still getting paid for literally sleeping on the job.
Here’s the clip, from C-SPAN:
