Between First Take, Undisputed, and Pardon The Interruption just to name a few, the TV sports debate talk show genre is booming now as never before. Fox Sports 1, in particular, has centered its strategy of competing with perennial market-leader ESPN on these shout-fests — where it often seems like the panelists’ positions are totally contrived, and the debates have all the authenticity of a WWE match.
Tuesday on Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports Live anchors Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole brilliantly lampooned the thriving genre. They squared off in a segment called Master Debaters, in which they purported to debate whether the Washington Redskins should sign quarterback Kirk Cousins to a lucrative contract.
The timer was set on the chyron for one minute. Onrait led off.
“Look, the Redskins need to pay Kirk Cousins,” Onrait said. “He may not be an elite quarterback, but he’s a top-tier quarterback in the NFL.”
“I agree with you,” O’Toole replied. “You get a top-tier quarterback in the NFL, ya stick with that guy no matter what.”
“I agree,” Onrait said.
And then…silence. Forty-six seconds of silence.
The master debaters remained stoic as the seconds ticked away. They hardly even blinked. It was pretty impressive. And quite compelling too. In 46 seconds, Onrait and O’Toole said absolutely everything that needed to be said about sports debate TV shows. The silence was truly refreshing.
