Claire McCaskill (D-MO) is getting a lot of attention for how she recently let Senate Republicans have it for not being more transparent about their efforts to replace Obamacare with the American Health Care Act (AHCA).
Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price spoke before the Senate Finance Committee on Thursday, and McCaskill asked committee chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) if he would call for a hearing so the proposed bill could be discussed. Hatch said he thought the committee already had a hearing, and after speaking with an aide, he insisted that Democrats were previously invited to share their opinions.
McCaskill wasn’t satisfied with that answer, and she made sure everyone in the room knew it:
“[W]e heard you, Mr. Secretary, just say, ‘We’d love your support.’ For what? We don’t even know. We have no idea what’s being proposed. There’s a group of guys in a back room somewhere that are making these decisions. There were no hearings in the House.”
McCaskill continued to berate Hatch, saying that Republicans were engaging in the same kind of actions that Democrats took when they were trying to get the Affordable Care Act through Congress. McCaskill noted that Democrats were criticized for their partisan processes in those days, yet Republicans don’t seem to have any interest in having public hearings to discuss the matter.
“You couldn’t have a more partisan exercise than what you’re engaged in right now,” McCaskill fumed. “We’re not even going to have a hearing on a bill that impacts one-sixth of our economy.
