Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will hold a briefing today, the second of the new year, to discuss the White House’s latest plans and administrative agenda. The briefing is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM EST.
This is likely to be a tough one for Sanders as, try as she might, it is unlikely she will be able to steer the conversation away from Michael Wolff’s explosive tell-all on President Donald Trump and his administration.
The president has already issued a statement damning former chief strategist Steve Bannon, who is quoted in the book as calling the infamous Trump Tower meeting between Jared Kushner, Donald Trump Jr. and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya “treasonous,” “unpatriotic” and “bad shit.”
“When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.” Trump fired back, via an official statement. “Now that he is on his own, Steve is learning that winning is not as easy as I make it look.”
Look for Sanders to stick to this general narrative, downplaying Bannon’s role in both the election of Trump and the early days of his administration.
The rest of the book is going to be trickier for her to navigate, as it features plenty of interviews with key players from the early days of the administration.
There’s former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Katie Walsh, who said dealing with the president was “like trying to figure out what a child wants.” There are multiple reports that campaign staff members, including Trump himself, did not expect to and did not want to win the election. There’s conservative firebrand Ann Coulter, warning the president “You can’t just hire your children.”
Heck, an excerpt even features Rupert Murdoch calling Trump a “fucking idiot.”
They can’t all be easily written off as fake news, can they? Maybe she can convince the press corps to solemnly wave goodbye to Sen. Orrin Hatch for 45 minutes.
We’ll see at 3:00 PM EST. Watch live above, via NBC News.
