After Michael Phelps won the 200m Individual Medley Thursday night, he had just 38 minutes to catch his breath before returning to the pool for the 100m Butterfly semifinals. He was left with just enough time to have one quick text message exchange with a pal.
That person? Ray Lewis.
The Washington Post reports that Phelps — a Towson, MD native — and the retired Baltimore Ravens linebacker are close friends.
“We’ve talked about so much the last couple years of my career,” Phelps told the Post in 2013. “He just helped me get through a lot of hard times, and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without him.
He’s been through everything — the ups and downs — and he’s helped me literally overcome a lot of things that I’ve had in my life that have been tough, and he’s been there for me.
