White House on March For Our Lives: ‘We Applaud the Many Courageous Young Americans’
While hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Washington, D.C. for the March For Our Lives rally calling for an end to gun violence, President Donald Trump spent the day down in Mar-a-Lago.
Though the president was spending the weekend down at his golf course, White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters released a statement lauding the students who had helped organize the protests acr5ss the country.
“We applaud the many courageous young Americans exercising their First Amendment rights today,” she wrote.
The statement continued, “Keeping our children safe is a top priority of the President’s, which is why he urged Congress to pass the Fix NICS and STOP School Violence Acts, and signed them into law. Additionally, on Friday, the Department of Justice issued the rule to ban bump stocks following through on the President’s commitment to ban devices that turn legal weapons into illegal machine guns.”
The march came about in the wake of the horrific Parkland shooting as students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School pushed for the rally in an effort to get action on gun control.
