Whoopi Goldberg Goes Off on Trump’s Time Person of the Year Claim: ‘THEY DON’T CALL YOU!’

The View returned from Thanksgiving break Monday to tackle President Donald Trump’s claim that he turned down a request from Time Magazine to sit for a photo shoot and interview for the magazine’s “Person of the Year” issue. Trump contended that Time wouldn’t commit to naming him Person of the Year. Whoopi Goldberg isn’t buying it.

Goldberg’s colleague, Joy Behar, opened the discussion by coming perhaps as close as she ever has to siding with Trump — saying that the president ought not be subject to a tryout of sorts in order to be named Person of the Year.

“I don’t understand why the process is he practically has to audition to be on the cover,” Behar said. “He is the president, incompetent though he may be. He is the president. And so, he has to sit for a photo shoot and then they decide?”

Goldberg pushed back.

“When they decide Person of the Year, they don’t do an interview with them,” she said. “That’s why they can do dead people. There’s no photo shoot…What is he talking about?”

She added, to Behar, “You fell for this one.”

Time did, contrary to Goldberg’s claim, commission a photo shoot in 2016 — when they named Trump Person of the Year. They also interviewed him for the issue. Further, no one has ever been named Person of the Year posthumously — although Steve Jobs was under consideration after his death in 2011.

Still, Goldberg disputed the idea that the magazine would keep Trump in limbo by giving him a heads-up that he was on the short list.

“They don’t call you!” Goldberg said. “THEY DON’T CALL YOU!”
