Biden Trolls Republican Hecklers During SOTU: ‘Oh, You Don’t Like That Bill, Huh?’
President Joe Biden appeared to enjoy trolling Republican hecklers who jeered when he spoke of his border reform bill during Thursday night’s State of the Union address.
“In November, my team began serious negotiations with a bipartisan group of senators,” Biden began. “The result was a bipartisan bill with the toughest set of border security reforms we’ve ever seen.”
Dissenters began yelling, “No!” and booing at the suggestion, which spurred Biden on.
“Oh, you don’t think so? Oh, you don’t like that bill, huh? That conservatives got together and said it was a good bill. I’ll be darn! That’s amazing!”
Biden then ran down the provisions of the legislation.
“That bipartisan bill would hire 1,500 more security agents and officers, 100 more immigration judges to help tackle the backload of two million cases, 4,300 more asylum officers and new policies so they can resolve cases in six months instead of six years now. What are you against?”
Democrats cheered with Vice President Kamala Harris rising to her feet and clapping enthusiastically behind him.
Republicans have long complained that Biden hasn’t done enough to stop the crisis at the southern border with Mexico. A bipartisan group of senators proposed the compromise bill on the border and wars in Ukraine and the Middle East that was declared “dead on arrival” by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) in the House.
Biden visited a border town in Texas last week, where he called on former President Donald Trump to support the bill and get it moved through Congress.
“Instead of playing politics with the issue, instead of telling members of Congress to block the bill, join me or I’ll join you in telling the Congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill,” Biden said, addressing Trump, who opposed bill.
