CNN Panel Gets Awkward After Commentator Jokes McConnell Endorsing Trump Is Why He Keeps ‘Cutting’ Himself
CNN commentator Jonah Goldberg did not take a New York Times report that Donald Trump is courting the endorsement of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) well — briefly bringing a panel down in the dumps.
On a Tuesday CNN This Morning panel moderated by Kasie Hunt, Goldberg was asked about the endorsement in light of McConnell breaking with Trump over the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Hunt asked the “pressures” behind endorsing someone who “basically led an invasion of his House.” McConnell said after Jan. 6 that Trump “provoked” the attack.
“Yeah,” Goldberg, a conservative critic of Trump, said with a sigh. “It’s stories like this that are why I can’t stop cutting myself. I mean, I just —”
Hunt and Audie Cornish both quickly jumped in and cut off the Dispatch founder.
“That got so dark so quickly. It’s breakfast time,” Cornish said.
“Let’s not joke about this,” Hunt said, warning against the self-harm comparison.
Goldberg got back on track by noting he has “siginficant respect for McConnell” as a “institutionalist” and a party leader, but argued there’s a downside to the longtime senator being a “cold-eyed realist” and that’s that he’ll approach a Trump endorsement “purely pragmatically.”
If it helps the party, Goldberg argued, McConnell will go through with the endorsement despite misgivings about Trump.
“I said earlier just as an aside that politicians will always disappoint you,” Goldberg said. “This is a perfect example of it.”
