CNN’s John Avlon Scoffs at Idea Trump Was Depressed After Jan 6: ‘McCarthy Went Down There to Kiss the Ring, Let’s Be Real’
CNN political analyst and host John Avlon poured cold water all over the idea that former President Donald Trump was in need of consoling after January 6th and that is why Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) went down to Mar-a-Lago for a visit that helped to rehabilitate Trump in the GOP.
Avlon made the comments while discussing former Rep. Liz Cheney’s (R-WY) new book, which includes messages from McCarthy to Cheney telling her that Trump was “depressed” and “not eating” and that is why he went to see him.
CNN’s Sara Sidner read from the book, “‘They’re really worried,’ McCarthy says, ‘Trump’s not eating, so they asked me to come see him.’ ‘What?’ Cheney says, ‘You went to Mar-a-Lago because Trump’s not eating?’”
“McCarthy, ‘Yeah, he’s really depressed.’ You can understand honestly, I can understand a president who has lost being really depressed, but that also denotes something important. He knew he lost,” continued Sidner.
“And she says earlier, and other people, that McCarthy is saying he knew he lost. Look, the reason I think that’s a little ridiculous and Cheney did as well, is this idea of Trump playing the victim and his aides saying, look, Kevin, you’ve got to console Donald Trump. He’s not going to eat unless he shows you like some lovesick teenager is just how he’s heartbroken. That’s just utter BS,” Avlon replied.
“You know, typically people would seek solace and family. Yeah. But McCarthy went down there to kiss the ring, let’s be real, and ended up reviving Trump. So this playing the victim after you’ve been the aggressor of his classic Trump move, sentimentality in the need of solace from from friends and colleagues this is not,” Avlon concluded as Sidner agreed.
