Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) slammed former President Donald Trump for pledging to be a “dictator” during the first day of his presidency if reelected, adding individuals should not take him “literally” or “seriously.”

During Fox News’ town hall on Tuesday night, the Republican frontrunner told Sean Hannity he would only be a “dictator” on “day one” of his potential return to the White House after the Fox News host requested he pledge to “never abuse power as retribution against anybody.”

Trump claimed that he would use his first day in office to close the border and drill for oil adding, “After that, I’m not a dictator, ok?”

On Capitol Hill Wednesday, Romney fielded questions from reporters regarding Trump’s response last night, dismissing his claims of a dictatorship as “absurd.”

“You know, it’s funny. Donald Trump says so many absurd things that I don’t even know how you respond to them,” Romney said to reporters. “So I sort of laugh and think he’s trying to entertain his base. It’s a dangerous course to go down, of course, but that’s what he does on a regular basis. And I sort of laugh at what he’s saying.”

“The other day he was saying, we’re going to get rid of Obamacare. It’s like, really, what have you got? You said that when you were president, did you ever introduce a plan to replace Obamacare? No. So at some point you realize you don’t have to take him literally and you don’t have to take him seriously either,” he concluded
