‘DISREGARD CONCESSION EMAIL’: GOP Congressional Candidate Accidentally Concedes Defeat Hours Before Polls Close

Derek Myers

Republican congressional candidate Derek Myers accidentally sent out a concession email on Tuesday as voters were still going to the polls in the Ohio primaries.

Myer’s campaign quickly walked back the error, sending out a second email that said, “The previous email citing a concession was sent in error, due to a technical issue. Please disregard the email. Thank you. DISREGARD CONCESSION EMAIL.”

The first email, however, quickly went viral online as political journalists shared it online. Politico’s Olivia Beavers jested, “OMG you can’t make this up. DISREGARD CONCESSION EMAIL.”

The content of the pre-written concession also raised some eyebrows and served as fodder for jokes.

“Derek Myers, the American First candidate in the 11-way primary race for the Republican nomination in Ohio’s Second Congressional Race has conceded. Tonight did not go as we had hoped, but as we know, this race is decided in the primary. I want to give my congratulations to the Congressman-Elect,” began the draft, adding:

“I’m looking forward to uniting behind him and working with him to get President Trump re-elected to the White House and evicting Joe Biden,” Derek said from a private watch party in Chillicothe, surrounded by 100 of his close friends and supporters. “Listen, I’m in my thirties and as I’ve told everyone on this campaign trail, ‘if I don’t win this race, that’s okay!’ I’ve got thirty-or-fifty more years left and that’s if I live a good life. I’m looking forward to staying in the arena of Ohio politics and working with all Republicans to make Ohio great again!”

“Ohio 2nd District GOP candidate Derek Myers has conceded the primary after ‘tonight did not go as we had hoped.’ Slight problem: the election is still happening!” jested Jacob Rubashkin.

Myers himself jumped into the fray a bit, responding to one social media user who suggested Myers must be feeling pretty bad about his chances to have the concession so readily at hand.

“There is also a winning email prepared. Would you like that one, as well?” Myers replied.

Local media noted that Myers, a former Democrat, has branded himself as a MAGA Republican in the race and first grabbed headlines while working for disgraced, fabulist ex-Congressman George Santos (R-NY):

He served a brief stint in former U.S. Rep. George Santos’ office in January 2023. Myers filed a sexual harassment claim against Santos, R-NY, after the job offer was rescinded. When it came to the complaint Myers made against Santos, the Committee on Ethics report on Santos “was unable to substantiate this allegation.”

Myers is facing 11 other Republicans in the primary for Ohio’s second congressional district.
