Ex-Campaign Treasurer For Rep George Santos To Plead Guilty To Felony Charges Related To Criminal Investigation

A former aide to Rep. George Santos (R-NY) will reportedly plead guilty Thursday to a felony charge connected to the federal investigation into the congressman.

Nancy Marks served as Santos’ treasurer for both of his election campaigns. According to the Associated Press, she resigned “amid growing questions about Santos’ campaign finances and revelations Santos had fabricated much of his life story.”

NBC News’ Tom Winter said the “unspecified felony” against Marks will be revealed when the docket is filed Thursday afternoon.

“They say in the docket, there is a spot on there, if it says this is related to any particular case, and it does say that it is related to the ongoing federal criminal investigation and indictment against the congressman from New York,” Winter said. “He faces a 13-count indictment tied to a host of charges including lying to the House of Representatives, and all sorts of other types of fraud charges. That case is ongoing. The congressman has professed his innocence and he said he’s not guilty of those charges. But this is now another domino in that investigation.”

Santos was arrested in May after being indicted on charges that included wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, and making false statements.  Thus far, Santos has refused to resign, and former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy opted to support Santos rather than calling for his resignation.

Santos told NewsNation anchor Dan Abrams (and Mediaite founder and owner) he was “confident” he would not go to prison. However, the congressman hinted that he might consider pleading guilty and resigning from Congress at some point.

“I’m not making, I’m not making any assertions right now,” Santos said. “Like I said earlier, I’m like, it’s — right now, the answer is no. But you just never know. Life is — you don’t know what life is going to come at you, you know?”
