Former House Republican Warns Against Making Jim Jordan Speaker: ‘Certainly a Dark Day’

 

As Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) appears to be inching closer to the House speakership, one of his former colleagues blasted the idea.

Jordan and his allies have been strong-arming members on his behalf ahead of a Tuesday vote on whether to make him speaker, which the House does not have because it removed Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the post two weeks ago. The tactics

Like McCarthy and failed speaker nominee Steve Scalise (R-LA), Jordan voted against certifying the 2020 presidential election. However, Jordan is known to have taken matters further by forwarding a text to then-President Donald Trump’s chief of staff arguing the vice president could refuse to certify the election, which Trump lost.

Appearing on Monday’s edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC, former Rep. David Jolly R-FL) slammed Jordan and his potential promotion.

“[T]he House Republicans may elevate someone who indeed plotted an insurrection against the republic,” he said, before saying Jordan is only marginally worse than McCarthy. “So, this is not too far of a move from McCarthy to Jordan. What is different is some of the specific activities of Jordan and the tactics of Jordan. But what we know today is that the Republican caucus remains an insurrection caucus, regardless of who the speaker is. Certainly, you could say Jordan’s tactics feel and look more dangerous. Will he be more successful? I don’t know.”

Jolly concluded, “But certainly a dark day should we see Jim Jordan elevated to the speakership.”
