Fox’s Baier Reports He’s Hearing ‘Crazy Things’ on The Hill Amid Speakership Fight: ‘Jesus Of Nazareth Could Not Get 217 Votes Right Now’

Bret Baier reported on Thursday that he is hearing “crazy things” on Capitol Hill during the ongoing speakership battle.

Last week, eight Republicans succeeded in removing Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as speaker after one of them filed a motion to vacate the chair. Those eight were joined by 208 Democrats. Republicans nominated Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), but he currently does not have the votes needed to become speaker. Other members of the conference prefer Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) for the job.

McCarthy joined Baier on Special Report on Fox News, where the host asked about the mess in the House, where the next speaker will need a majority of votes to win. (There are currently 433 members and two vacancies, which puts that number at 217 – assuming all members vote for a candidate.)

“I’ve talked to a lot of people up there, you know, private conversations on background,” Baier said. “A number of them told me crazy things, saying that probably Jesus of Nazareth could not get 217 votes right now.”

He then asked the former speaker, “Is this particular conference governable? Can you get to 217 for anybody?”

“It’s tough right now,” McCarthy replied. “Look, it took me 15 rounds to get there. I thought that would have worn people out. Look at what we were able to accomplish in those nine months, even when you came to the debt ceiling, the biggest cut in American history. Work requirements, we did border security bill, we made us energy independent, we did the parents’ bill of rights. We were very successful, but unfortunately, eight members, not from a conservative basis joined all the Democrats for their own personal belief that put us into this mess. That clearly put a challenge. And now it’s very difficult to get to 217.”

Baier later noted that McCarthy has appeared on Fox six times since Saturday before asking him if he is angling to return to his old job.
