Fox’s Brit Hume Skeptical of Trump Inaugural Speech: ‘He Made Some Quite Extravagant Promises’
Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume expressed some skepticism on Monday about the “big promises” made by President Donald Trump in his inauguration speech, and whether some of them can be achieved.
During Fox’s live coverage of the inauguration ceremony, anchor Bret Baier turned to Hume to ask about the president’s speech, and Hume replied that, while the beginning of the speech was “down-to-business,” Trump’s soaring rhetoric about the future could be an over-promise.
“There were some rhetorical flourishes at the end,” said Hume. “I think some quite extravagant promises in the sense, you know, the ‘Golden Age of America,’ as you said, is just about to begin.”
“And he said the greatest four years in American history are about to begin,” he added. “Well, one certainly hopes that turns out to be true. But it’s quite a big promise.”
Hume pointed out that Trump was happy to criticize former president Joe Biden in his remarks, and noted that Trump is likely to undo some of Biden’s executive orders with his own, when issuing them from the desk he has set up in Capitol One arena for today:
HUME: The first part of this speech was a down-to-business speech, a reiteration of promises he’d made along the campaign trail and since. He did not fail to imply very sharp criticism of his predecessor’s administration, which is certainly his right to do.
And there were some rhetorical flourishes at the end. And as you suggest, Bret, I think some quite extravagant promises in the sense, you know, the golden age of America, as you said, is just about to begin. And he said the greatest four years in American history are about to begin. Well, one certainly hopes that turns out to be true. But it’s quite a big promise.
And I think the speech was full of quite big promises. I think he I think he feels he has a tailwind because of the decisive nature of the election, narrow though, the margin ended up being. And because, you know, he has Congress under Republican control, albeit narrowly there as well.
I think he has high hopes that he can bring a lot of this to bear. And a great deal of it, I think, or at least a large piece of it, is represented in the executive orders he is issuing today to cover a multitude of topics which are available to him because the previous president relied on so many executive orders which can be revoked. A new president can revoke the old president’s orders. And I – Mr. Trump is going to do that in spades today.
