California Gov. Gavin Newsom reportedly met with White House Hollywood ambassador Jon Voight on Thursday and “expressed interest in working with” President Donald Trump on revitalizing the California film industry.

According to a report published by Politico senior reporter Melanie Mason, Newsom and Voight met in Los Angeles on Thursday for a private meeting “to discuss their shared interest in boosting the state’s iconic industry, which has increasingly moved its operations to other states and overseas.”

Citing an unnamed source familiar with the meeting, Mason reported that the two men discussed Voight’s plans for revitalizing the American film industry through federal tax credits, among other ideas, and that “Newsom expressed interest in working with Trump on the issue.”

“They shared a commitment to working together to help to build up the film industry in the U.S. — particularly California and Los Angeles,” the source told Politico.

Voight – one of the most prominent Trump supporters in the film industry – was appointed by Trump to serve as Special Ambassador to Hollywood in January, alongside actors Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone.

“The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death,” wrote Trump on Truth Social in May. “Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat.”

Trump then proceeded to announce “a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands,” an idea reportedly given to him by Voight.
