Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) took to X on Wednesday and replied to a recent Associated Press story about legal Haitian migrants in Ohio with a shocking attack on Haiti as a country and its people.
Higgins shared the headline of the article that read, “Haitian group in Springfield, Ohio, files citizen criminal charges against Trump and Vance,” and added:
Lol. These Haitians are wild. Eating pets, vudu [sic], nastiest country in the western hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters… but damned if they don’t feel all sophisticated now, filing charges against our President and VP.
All these thugs better get their mind right and their ass out of our country before January 20th.
Higgins later deleted his tweet, reportedly after being confronted by his fellow House Republicans.

Former President Donald Trump and his running mate Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) have spread the widely debunked smear that Haitian immigrants are eating their neighbors’ pets in Springfield, Ohio. Trump and Vance’s highly-publicized claims have led to fear within the migrant community as schools have been closed and events canceled, citing threats.
The AP explained how a group can file charges in the state of Ohio, which do not carry an official weight beyond a public accusation. “The Haitian Bridge Alliance made the move after inaction by the local prosecutor, said their attorney, Subodh Chandra of the Cleveland-based Chandra Law Firm,” wrote the AP, adding:
Charges brought by private citizens are rare, but not unheard of, in Ohio. Examples might be a grocery store charging a customer for a bounced check. State law requires a hearing to take place before the affidavit can move forward. As of Tuesday afternoon, none had been scheduled.
Higgins has a long history of making inflammatory remarks. Higgins in the past has said everything from accusing Joe Biden of “staging a civil war” to warning Special Counsel Jack Smith his “days are numbered.”
