JD Vance Says He’s Not Sure If Racist Jokes at Trump Rally Were Racist: ‘I’m So Over It’
Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) on Monday defended the highly controversial jokes made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe during Sunday night’s Trump rally in New York City. Vance was speaking at a rally in Wisconsin when he asked about the jokes that have been widely condemned as racist, including by many Republicans.
Vance noted he hasn’t heard the jokes himself, but concluded that he’s “so over’ the controversy already.
“I’ve heard about the joke. I haven’t actually seen the joke that you mentioned. But I think that it’s telling that Kamala Harris’s closing message is essentially that all of Donald Trump’s voters are Nazis. And you should get really pissed off about a comedian telling a joke,” Vance said, referring to ex-Marine General John Kelly saying that Trump once praised Hitler.
“That is not the message of a winning campaign. And most importantly, it’s not the message of a person who’s fit to be the president of the United States of America. And my own view on this is, look, again, I haven’t seen the joke. I know, maybe maybe it’s a stupid racist joke like you said, maybe it’s not. I haven’t seen it. I’m not going to comment on the specifics of the joke. But I think that we have to stop getting so offended at every little thing in the United States of America. I’m just, I’m so over it.”
Hinchcliffe made several shock jokes during his routine on Sunday night, including jokes about Black people eating watermelons, Jews not wanting to part with money, and Palestinians throwing rocks.
However, his jab at Latinos sparked the fiercest backlash. “There’s a lot going on. Like, I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” Hinchcliffe joked. He later ripped migrants and Latinos in general, saying they “love making babies.”
“They do. There’s no pulling out. They don’t do that. They come inside. Just like they did to our country,” he added.
