Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Impeachment Motion Shot Down as Eight Republicans Vote With Democrats
The House of Representatives voted to refer a motion to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas back to committee on Monday night, basically killing the measure.
Mayorkas has been a bugbear of Republicans over his department’s handling of the southern border.
The move to sanction Mayorkas was introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), but was shelved by a vote of 209-201. Twenty-three members did not vote.
The eight Republicans who voted to refer Greene’s resolution back to the Homeland Security Committee were: Cliff Bentz; (OR); Ken Buck (CO); John Duarte (CA); Virginia Foxx (NC); Darrell Issa (CA); Tom McClintock (CA); Patrick McHenry (NC); Mike Turner (OH).
After the vote, Greene put the eight on blast on social media.
Meanwhile, Buck appeared on CNN’s OutFront, where he explained his vote.
“Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has not committed an impeachable offense,” he stated. “I disagree strongly with how he’s handling the border. I think the border is porous. I think it’s a threat to this country. But it’s not a high crime or misdemeanor. It’s not treason. It’s not bribery. It’s not the crimes, the issues that our Founders set forth in the Constitution. And it’s wrong. We’re using impeachment in the last five, six years in a way that’s just inappropriate and demeans really the integrity of the House.”
He later added, “I didn’t vote for the first Trump impeachment or the second Trump impeachment,” Buck said. “And I’m not sure would’ve voted for the Clinton impeachment. It is really– it’s a drastic action to take. And it’s inappropriate in this situation.”
Had Greene’s impeachment efforts succeeded, the matter would have been taken up by the Senate, where Mayorkas’ removal would require two-thirds of senators to vote to convict.
