Matt Gaetz Crows About ‘MAGA Mike Johnson’s’ Pending Speakership: Shows You Where the ‘Power’ in the GOP ‘Truly Lies’
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who orchestrated the mutiny against former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), crowed that “MAGA is ascendant” with the nomination of the latest speaker candidate, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA).
Gaetz appeared on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast Wednesday to discuss Johnson, who became the fourth Republican nominee for House Speaker on Tuesday after Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) withdrew from the race.
“It is going to be a great moment for the House,” Gaetz said. “And you know what, at the very end, when some people didn’t know if they could still bring back McCarthy, a few of them just left the room and didn’t vote. And the swamp is on the run, MAGA is ascendant. If you don’t think that moving from Kevin McCarthy to MAGA Mike Johnson shows the ascendance of this movement and where the power in the Republican Party truly lies, then you’re not paying attention.”
Gaetz added, “But they are crying, they are hand-wringing and bed wetting over on K Street. We have an honorable, righteous man who is about to take this position. He’s going to do great things for this country.”
Johnson held a press conference Tuesday that turned chaotic after ABC News senior congressional correspondent Rachel Scott asked if he stood by “his efforts to try to overturn the 2020 election.” Republicans flanking Johnson laughed and booed at the question with 80-year-old Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) yelling, “Shut up! Shut up!”
According to NBC News, Johnson “played a key role in in efforts to overturn the 2020 election.” Reporter Summer Concepcion wrote:
Johnson, who currently serves as the GOP caucus vice chair and is an ally of Trump, led the amicus brief signed by more than 100 House Republicans in support of a Texas lawsuit seeking to invalidate the 2020 election results in four swing states won by Biden: Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
The House is set to vote on Johnson’s nomination Wednesday.
